The Windows app and the browser extension are not hosted: they run entirely on the user's device. They are distributed from the website, on the Chrome Web Store (Google) and on the Microsoft Store (Microsoft). The Android app, distributed on Google Play (Google), opens the website in Chrome: it contains no engine.
Nature of the service
Korr is a free spelling and grammar checker. The website and the extension, like the Android app that opens the website, correct French, English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese; the Windows app corrects French and English.
All text processing is local: it happens in the user's browser or on the user's computer. No text is sent to a server, because no correction server exists. Users can check it themselves: after the first load, they cut their connection, and correction keeps working.
Intellectual property
Korr (software, texts, logo, brand and website content) is the property of Geoffrey Giner. All rights reserved. It is free to use under the terms of use.
The following third-party components are distributed:
- Node.js (MIT license), bundled with the Windows app to run the checker. The full text of its license ships with the app;
- the Dicollecte / Grammalecte French lexicon (Olivier R., grammalecte.net), distributed under the Mozilla Public License 2.0: a list of words and their forms, which Korr uses as data, with no third-party engine. The file ships as is, with its license notice, in the website, the extension and the app;
- the SCOWL English lexicon (Spell Checker Oriented Word Lists, © 2000-2018 Kevin Atkinson, with parts © 1997 Princeton University (WordNet), © 1993 Geoff Kuenning (Ispell) and © 2016 Benjamin Titze), distributed under a permissive license that allows use, modification, distribution and sale provided the copyright notices are kept: a word list Korr uses as data so that it never "corrects" an existing English word. The file ships with these notices in the website, the extension and the app, and their full text accompanies each package (SCOWL-Copyright.txt);
- a French context model (frequencies of words and word pairs) computed from the sentences of the Tatoeba project (tatoeba.org), under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 France license (CC BY 2.0 FR), and from European Parliament texts of the Europarl corpus (Koehn, 2005, distributed by OPUS), © European Union, reuse authorised with acknowledgement of the source. The file carries these attributions and ships in the website, the extension and the app.
- an English context model, limited to words that sound alike (their/there, then/than…), computed from the English sentences of the Tatoeba project, under the same CC BY 2.0 FR license. The file carries this attribution and ships in the website, the extension and the app;
- a Spanish frequency lexicon (words and their occurrence counts), computed from the Spanish sentences of the Tatoeba project, under the same CC BY 2.0 FR license. The file carries this attribution and ships in the website and the extension;
- the LibreOffice Spanish spelling dictionary (RLA-ES project, Santiago Bosio and contributors), distributed by its authors under a choice of licenses, including the Mozilla Public License 1.1 or later; Korr uses it under the Mozilla Public License 2.0. It is a list of words and affix rules, which Korr uses as data to know that a Spanish word does not exist, with no third-party engine. The file ships otherwise unmodified, with its license notice, in the website and the extension;
- a French language model derived from GPT-fr (Quantmetry and the Laboratoire de Linguistique Formelle, CNRS), under the Apache 2.0 license, which Korr retrained to choose between spellings that sound alike, using Tatoeba and Europarl sentences. It ships in the Windows app and, on the website, is downloaded only if the user turns on "advanced correction"; it comes with the text of its license and a statement of these modifications;
- an English language model derived from DistilGPT2 (Hugging Face), under the Apache 2.0 license, which Korr retrained to choose between close spellings (homophones, agreement, verb forms), using English Tatoeba sentences. It ships in the Windows app and, on the website, is downloaded only if the user turns on "advanced English correction"; it comes with the text of its license and a statement of these modifications;
- a Spanish language model derived from GPT2-Spanish (Alejandro Oñate Latorre and Jorge Ortiz Fuentes, Deep ESP), under the MIT license, which Korr retrained to choose between close spellings (accents, homophones, agreement), using Spanish Tatoeba sentences. It exists only on the website and is downloaded only if the user turns on "advanced Spanish correction"; it comes with the text of its license and a statement of these modifications;
- the Inter typeface (The Inter Project Authors), under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, served by the website with the text of its license (
fonts/OFL-Inter.txt); - ONNX Runtime (Microsoft, MIT license), the engine that runs these models on the user's computer, shipped in the Windows app and, on the website, with these models, together with its license and the notices of the components it contains.
- Android Browser Helper (Google, Apache 2.0 license), the library that opens the website full screen in Chrome, shipped in the Android app.
The accuracy measurements published on the website are released under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license (CC BY 4.0): they may be reused with credit to Korr.
Third-party trademarks, logos and product names mentioned belong to their respective owners.
Personal data
Corrected text never leaves the user's device. The website uses no cookie. It measures its traffic with Vercel Web Analytics and PostHog (hosted in the European Union), anonymously and without cookies. The browser's local storage is used only to remember the user's preferences, which never leave the device.
